AI shopping agents are AI assistants that don’t just find products — they complete the purchase for you. On September 28, 2026, Shopify opened its checkout to browser-based AI agents, letting them read your cart, update delivery options, and submit payment with your authorization. Here’s how it works and how to use it safely.
A PYMNTS Intelligence report on agentic commerce found that 56% of consumers will let an agent search and compare products on their behalf, and 35% will grant an agent access to their saved payment credentials — the demand is already here.
What Are AI Shopping Agents?
An AI shopping agent is an AI assistant that carries out shopping tasks for you: instead of opening tabs, comparing prices, and filling in checkout forms, you give the agent a plain-English instruction — “buy a water bottle under $30” — and it does the clicking.
Until recently, these agents hit a wall at the checkout page. They could search products and add items to a cart, but finishing the purchase meant handing control back to you. That changed on September 28, 2026, when Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete entire purchases on its merchants’ sites.
How Does Shopify’s Agentic Checkout Work?
Shopify’s system runs on WebMCP, a proposed standard for letting AI agents work inside the buyer’s browser. Shopify already supported WebMCP for storefronts and carts — agents could search a retailer’s inventory and add items to a cart. The September update extends that support to the full checkout, including Shop Pay.
Three new tools do the work:
get_checkout — lets the agent read the current state of your checkout
update_checkout — lets it change details like your address or delivery option
complete_checkout — places the order, but only after you authorize it
Critically, the agent doesn’t rely on screenshots or scraping the page. It uses structured tools that read and submit checkout data directly, which Shopify says produces more accurate information and proper disclosures.
Under the hood is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a set of standards Shopify co-developed with Google. UCP is the shared language that lets agents discover products, build carts, and check out — designed to work with assistants from Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and others. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, according to staff product manager Gil Greenberg, who announced it on X.
Which AI Assistants Can Shop for You?
Two big partnerships are already live:
Meta’s Muse. About a week before the checkout announcement, Shopify partnered with Meta so that Muse can search Shopify’s product catalog and complete purchases using Shop Pay across Shopify-powered stores by default — merchants are included unless they opt out.
Instinct. The personal AI agent from Instinct can now search Shopify’s merchant network for products, find live information on prices, sizes, and availability, and — when you’re ready — set up the order so you check out with Shop Pay using your saved payment and shipping details.
More assistants are expected to plug in through the Universal Commerce Protocol over time.
Why Are Some Stores Blocking AI Agents?
Not everyone is opening the door. While Shopify moved toward agents, Amazon and Adidas have been blocking AI agents from making purchases on users’ behalf on their platforms.
The split reflects a deeper fight: who owns the moment you discover a product. For twenty years, that meant search results and product pages. If shoppers start saying “find me a rain jacket under $150” to an assistant instead, the assistant decides what gets shown. Shopify’s bet is that the safest place to stand is inside the protocol. Amazon, which owns both the store and the customer, has the opposite incentive — and it’s reportedly in court with Perplexity over similar agent traffic.

Is It Safe to Let an AI Buy Things for You? 7 Tips
Agentic checkout is new, and the safety playbook is still being written. These seven tips will keep you in control:
- Start with a small purchase. Treat your first few agent-assisted buys as experiments. A $15 test order teaches you how the confirmation flow works.
- Read the confirmation before you approve. The agent only submits the transaction after your authorization — make that moment count. Check the item, size, quantity, and total.
- Set spending limits. If the assistant offers spending caps, turn them on. A hard ceiling is the simplest protection against a misread instruction.
- Compare the price. The thing worth watching is whether the price shown through the agent matches the one on the shop’s own page. The incentives around that will get complicated as agents intermediate more purchases.
- Use stores you already trust. Stick to established merchants with clear return policies while the technology matures.
- Watch your order updates. Keep notifications on so you see confirmations, shipping updates, and changes immediately.
- Know who pays for mistakes. Nobody has fully settled who is responsible when an agent misreads an instruction. Until liability is clear, double-check every order.
What’s Next for Agentic Commerce?
Expect three things: more assistants plugging into protocols like UCP, a growing debate over merchant opt-in versus opt-out, and hard questions about price transparency when an AI sits between you and the store. Demand is already here — the rules are just catching up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I still approve the purchase myself?
Yes. The agent reads your cart and prepares the order, but the transaction goes through only after you authorize it.
Can the AI see my credit card number?
No. Shopify’s risk controls use verified buyer credentials limited to a single purchase, so an agent never handles reusable card details.
Which stores work with AI shopping agents?
Eligible Shopify merchants are included by default (they can opt out). Amazon and Adidas currently block agents from buying on users’ behalf.
Does agentic checkout cost extra?
No extra fee has been announced. The purchase completes like a normal order, including Shop Pay where supported.
